Keeping up with the Joneses是一个典型的美式习语,表示“和你的富裕邻居保持同等的生活方式或质量”,这其实是一句讽刺的话,指“和左邻右舍比排场比阔气”。

The first day of the month is held to be a special day in many Earth cultures. Strange social rituals are enacted on this day which, although it happens rather regularly, creeps up on you quite unexpectedly. In Britain, for instance, you may be confronted by people who pinch you, then punch you on the arm, and say "Pinch, Punch, First of the Month." The origins of this rather unpleasant custom are lost in time, however I can offer you some useful advice. The only defence against this custom is to pinch and punch first because tradition demands that the pinchee is not allowed to retaliate.

Why don't fish thrown back in the water warn their mates and spoil the fishing?

Cautious species, such as brown trout, often do just that. Other species, such as redfin perch, bite more readily with increased noise and movement.

Paul Roberts, Lake Cathie

Fish have only a seven-second memory span, so the conversation would go something like: "Hey Nemo, how'd you get that hook in your mouth?"

"Well ... um ... oh, look, a worm!"

Shane Lloyd, Randwick

以上内容跟主题无关,just for fun

In Australia, this particular activity is called 'A Pinch and a Punch for the First of the Month'. I happen to like this version better, as it is more poetic than the crude American version.

The victim piched and punched can then respond with 'A kick and a flick for being so quick!' also with Australian rules.
