Biodiesel is mainly used in the furnace, heavy-machine and agro-machine such as agro-tractor in China now. No standard is available at present, so the two largest fuel distributors, SINOPEC and CNPC, don't permit their refinery and gas station to blend biodiel into petrodiesel. Of course, in some regions, some tests are performed to use B20 in buses, such as Changde City, Hunan Provice. Finally, some high-grade biodiesel is exported to Europe.

The uses of biodiesel in route system can not only decrease the pollution of exhaust emissions from trucks or buses in the cities, but also save investment by using the existing storage and gas stations. There is about 18M tons diesel consumption in China in 2002, and 61M tons is expected in 2020. If in order to improve the lubricity performance, low sulfur and low aromatic diesel is blended with biodiesel with an addition of 2%, 12.2M tons biodiesel will be needed in 2020. Therefore, China must develop new technology with independent intellectual property right as soon as possible, and set up 0.1M tons /a biodiesel and chemical engineering demonstration base for producing biodiesel, glycerol and refine

According to the “tenth-five year” programming, developing bio-liquid fuel is one direction of our national industry, and developing biodiesel industry will be important to China energy strategy safety, environment protection and the agriculture industrial structure readjustment. At the time of research institutes developing new technology of biodiesel production, some private corporations lead off to build up 10,000-20,000 tons /a production device and use used oil from restaurants to produce biodiesel.
