(转贴)究竟英国人是如何庆祝圣诞节的

The run-up to Christmas gets earlier and earlier each year. In town centres bright lights are hung up to make the high streets look festive, and people put Christmas trees in their windows covered with bright lights and tinsel. Even office workers put up Christmas decorations. Choirs come together and sing Christmas songs - carols - and collect money for charity.

Christmas is the biggest festival of the year for people in Britain. Although it is a traditional Christian celebration, many people who are not religious celebrate the event. People who like to cook, prepare their Christmas cakes and puddings early. They mix dried fruit and brandy together and leave it to mature - the richer the taste the more delicious the pudding!

On Christmas Eve children hang Christmas stockings on the mantlepiece by their fireplaces hoping that Santa Claus will come down the chimney and leave them some presents. Some people go to church at midnight to celebrate the coming of Christmas Day when Jesus Christ was born. On Christmas morning families wake up and open their presents together. Then they settle down to eat the biggest meal of the year. Traditionally people eat roast turkey, roast potatoes, brussel sprouts and gravy.
