我有罪,周末例行陪人偷懒后
今晚打球回来又帮她改年度报告
又只能泛听一段录音,关于GAMBILING
还好语速慢,生词也不多,当保持一下下状态好了……

Now, the VOA Special English Program Words and Their Stories.

Many people believe that money makes the world go around; others believe that money buys happiness. I do not agree with either idea. But I doadmit that money can make people do strange things. Let me tell youabout a person I once knew who like to play card games for money. Heliked to gamble.

My friend Bob had a problem because he liked to gamble at all costs. He would play at anytime and at any price to take part in a card game, such as poker. My friend would have to emptyup. He would have to pay a small amount of money at the beginning ofthe game. Bob always played with cold, hard cash, only coins and dollarbills. Sometimes, my friend will clean up. He would win a lot of moneyon one card game. He liked to tell me that one day he would break the bank. What a feeling it must be to win all of the money at a gambling table.

Othertimes, my friend would simply break even. He neither won nor lostmoney. But sometimes, Bob would lose his shirt. He would lose all themoney he had. He took a beating at the gambling table. When thishappened, my friend would have to go in a hole. He would go into debtand owe people money.

Recently, Bob turned to crimeafter losing all his money. In his job, he kept the books for a smallbusiness. He supervised the records of money earned and spent by thecompany. Although my friend was usually honest, he decided to cook thebooks. He illegally changed the financial records of the company. Thispermitted him to make a fast bark. My friend makes a quick, easy money dishonestly.

I never thought Bob would have sticky fingers. He did not seem like a thief who would steal money. But some people will do anything for love of money.

Bobused the money he stole from his company to gamble again. This time, hecashed in. He made a lot of money. Quickly, he was back on his feet. Hehad returned to good financial health. His company, however, ended upin the red. It lost more money than it earned. The company was nolonger profitable.

It did not take long before my friend's dishonesty was discovered. The company investigated and charged him with stealing. Bob tried to pass the bark, he triedto blame someone else for the deficit. His lie did not work, however,he ended up in jail. Today, I would bet my bottom dollar that my friendwill never gamble again. I would bet all I have that he learned hislesson about gambling.

Words and Their Stories in VOA Special English was written by Jill Moss. I'm Faith Lapidus.

This is the VOA Special English Education Report.

Now, wecontinue our discussion from last week about the pay for professors inthe United States. We looked at the averages. Today we narrow that toone example.

Andrew McMichaelis a young history professor in his sixth year at Western KentuckyUniversity, a state school in Bowling Green. He started as an assistantprofessor, teaching seven courses a year. His starting pay wasforty-three thousand dollars, plus benefits. These included healthinsurance for himself and his family, life insurance and a retirementplan.

His position was on the tenure track. This meant theuniversity would have to decide either to award him tenure, whichprovides job security, or ask him to leave. He requested tenure afterfive years. He had to present evidence of his research, teaching andservice on committees.

Teaching skills are measured throughevaluations by students and observations by other professors. Theresearch requirement includes publishing three articles or writing abook or translating a foreign work into English.

Professors maythink they have met all the requirements for tenure, but there are noguarantees. The process can seem mysterious and unfair.

Inrecent years many schools have reduced their number of tenuredpositions. Doing that saves money and gives administrators morecontrol. It also means greater competition for fewer jobs.

Earlier this year, Andrew McMichael received the decision about his future at Western Kentucky. It was good news: he earned tenure.

Thatmeant a promotion to associate professor. It also meant a ten percentpay increase as well as a one-time payment for good work.

He nowearns almost fifty-eight thousand dollars a year, not a huge amount, headmits. And he knows that even a starting professor outside the liberalarts, in an area like accounting, earns a lot more.

He alsoknows that his school could hire someone to teach the same number ofclasses he does for about fifteen thousand dollars with no benefits. But being a professor means more than teaching classes.

ProfessorMcMichael says tenure will mean the freedom to speak out and doresearch on whatever he wants. History is not his only interest. In thespring he will be team-teaching a class with a biologist on the historyand science of beer and brewing.

And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy S. I'm Steve Ember.

This is the VOA Special English Education Report.

Today we have the second of two reports about the education of college athletes in the United States.

Millionsof Americans follow college sports mainly football and basketball.Schools with good teams are under pressure to win, but now they arealso under pressure to do more to make sure their players get acomplete education.

On January 7th, the two top college football teams will play in New Or***s forthe National Championship. Ohio State, rated NO.1, will play NO.2,Louisiana State. Privacy laws limit what schools can say about academic performance. Still, we wonder how these two universities support their football players off the field as well as on.

Stan Jefferson directs player development for the football program at Ohio State University. He says all the players can receive the same academic help. This includes in their first year of school, required meetings of what is known as the interactive study table. This is a program in which players meet with a tutor before classes to discuss their work. Stan Jefferson tells us that players also meet with counselors who make sure they are progressing toward their degrees.

AlliesYouth says on its website that football players there also receiveextra help. It says, one hundred tutors are available and can providehelp in every subject.

We noted last week that the organizationthat governs college sports is paying closer attention to academicperformance. Schools now recieve an academic progress rate, or APR fromthe National Collegiate Athletic Association.

This number represents graduation rates for athletes on scholarships in each sport. An APR of 925 equals a graduation success rate of about 60 percent. So how were the top schools doing? 950 was the average APR for all the male sports teams in Division 1 in the last report in May.

Football teams had a lower average, 931. Louisiana State had an APR of 941. And the Ohio State football team had an APR of 928. Teams below 925 must develop plans to improve their athletes' academic performance.

Good athletes often get a free education on a scholarship. Critics say it is only fair to these young players to invest in their minds as much as their bodies.

Andthat's the VOA Special Education Report written by Nancy Stanbach. Thefirst part of our report can be found at voaspecialenglish.com. I'mSteve Ember.

President Bush today called the assassination of Bhutto “a cowardly act by murderous extremists who were trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy." Larry Miller has more from London.

Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai met with Benazir Bhutto just hours before she was killed. Karzai described those who planned the attack as "the enemies of prosperity and peace, and the well-being of Pakistan and of the Muslim world. " UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said it was a heinous crime. Russia's Vladimir Putin called it barbaric. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, "She risked everything in her attempt to win democracy in Pakistan. " The Vatican said the attack shows how difficult it is to pacify a nation so wrought by violence. Iran said the terrorists who carry out the assassination should be found and punished. Israel described Bhutto as a courageous woman who did not hide her ideas, did not know fear and served her country with courage. For NPR News. I'm Larry Miller in London.

A Pakistani opposition leader now says his party will boycott parliamentary elections scheduled for next month in the wake of Bhutto's death. Nawaz Sharif, a former Prime Minister was also scheduled to take part in the elections.

heinous:a If you describe something such as a crime as heinous, you mean that it is extremely evil or horrible.
