What is a Catholic?
Is the pope Catholic? Yes, but what is a Catholic and why have a Pope? Outwardly we can identify the Roman Catholic church by its pageantry, the robes and the hats, by the rituals of its memebers. But at its core, what divides Catholics from other Christians is the belief that only the Church itself, not individuals, can interpret the word of God.
Where does this authority come from? Catholics believe that Jesus himself established a papacy by recognizing his disciple Peter as his successor to lead the faithful. "The word 'pope' is not in the Bible but the office is, because Jesus said to St. Peter, 'You are the rock, and the rock on which I will build my church.'" Once in office, a Pope is a Pope for life. "We believe that revelation from Jesus, from God, comes to us in two streams of a fountain, to the truth comes to us, sacred tradition and sacred scripture." So through tradition the Catholic Church has developed many of its hallmarks. Priest must be male and celibate. Jesus's mother, the Virgin Mary, holds a uniquely revered position as to the saints.
Within Christianity, only the Catholic and Orthodox churches have monks and nuns. And you'll only see a confession booth in a Catholic church. Telling your sins to a priest and doing penance for them is one of the seven sacraments of Catholicism. Others include baptism, communion, confirmation and anointing of the sick. Between them there are the avenue to ultimate salvation, which in the end is what it's all about.
