Tamas Wells has the type of voice that you assume could only come from spending your school years continually being beaten up behind the bike racks. It is an instrument so frail and timid yet stunning in its clarity whilst still holding a glimpse of some deeper inner strength. To calls Wells a folk artist may be selling him a little short, but at any rate there are few in the local market that can match his beauty in delivering sparse and hushed music. With a knack for unconventional arrangements and expert phrasing Wells snippets of everyday life are well beyond the ordinary as evidenced by the sombre Valder Fields and otherworldly The Opportunity Fair. Whilst a song about telemarketing does little to shake the perception that Wells is a bookish indie-kid, The Telemarketer Resignation is another fine look at the mundane - albeit in the context of employment. Whilst unlikely to be the first disc pulled off the shelf in preparation for a big night on the tiles A Plea en Vendredi is as perfect as an anxious and awkward first date. A delight from start to finish!
