The Salt in Wind
One day we hurl rockets at the moon and the next day we abandon all reason and seek comfort in mythology. We are simple creatures yet our lives are complicated stories. In the end, we go nowhere, like a fool on a rocking horse.
It’s hard to look into the starry night and not succumb to hopelessness, because all our history is like the shadow of a bird on the ocean – a
fleeting moment in the unimaginable.
So, what are we to do?
For me, it is simple. I have no interest in the shimmering mysteries that
taunt us from the edge of the galaxy. If you ever awoke in the night and felt your lover’s fingers in your hair, at that moment, whoever lurks beyond the Milky Way is like a distant gypsy in a childhood fairytale. Let the monsters come another time. At that moment, when you are at the mercy of someone’s fingertips, there is nothing that a stargazer or philosopher can teach you, nothing to be gleaned from the hieroglyphics on the inner walls of pyramids.
To stand in the doorway of someone’s heart.
In every heart there is an untold story. A house without lights, waiting for the sound of a key in the door. Sometimes an old song breaks through the barricades, a shy ghost wandering among broken rooms, disturbing the dust. Sometimes a moonbeam will slip through the cold rain on the attic window and brush aside a cobweb. Is this your heart? Where are the stairs? Just as we cannot see the lights at sea until the ocean is shrouded in night, to find the first foothold in a lonely heart, we must carry our lantern into the darkness.
Give me your heart, you poor confused adventurer. Do you hear the clock ticking in the belly of the crocodile? Time is what you should fear the most.
Time is not the hand puppet of stragglers. To those who squander their chances, time becomes the hunter and you will not hear the sound of the dogs until it is too late. Do not be swayed by silliness like “fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” The true fools are those who dance at the crossroads while others hurry by to confront their destiny.
And do not be afraid of destiny. It has the power to decide the future of a civilization yet gentle enough to cast a soft silhouette of hope into the most desperate soul. In one moment its face is as merciless as a lightning bolt, then it becomes as gentle as the flickering candlelight in a Chinese girl’s eyes.
Some are trampled by destiny, lost forever in the endless unknowns of life. Then there are the few brave souls who grab at its horns and hang on at all costs. The risk is unimaginably high. No place is more terrible than the hopeless emptiness of a broken heart, yet for many it is the price to pay for a glimpse of true love.It is a long, bitter journey, sustained only by knowing that once you taste the wine there is no turning back. There will be moments of dark despair, but also moments of indescribable sweetness when a simple smile will turn the surrounding world into a blur of pleasure.
Are you prepared to bind yourself to the mast like Odysseus and sail to the brink of destruction, just for one chance to hear the Sirens sing?
The ship is waiting. There’s salt on the wind... |
