Hold on to your dream even it's leaving
Mr. Chairman, adjudicators, Ladies and gentlemen:
Good evening.
To begin with my speech, I‘d like to ask you these questions: How many students here have ever dreamed of studying in Tsing Hua University or Peking University? Moreover, I wonder, how many of you still hold that dream until now? The number may be rather small.
Many people may consider that we failed to realize our dreams when we were at the same starting line with others. What about now when we have been lag far behind? Absolutely out of the question!
Or you may excuse yourself: that’s just a dream, which is beyond our grasp. Then, the dream is leaving away from us bit by bit. At last we don’t have courage to turn the dream to be true any more.
Let me tell you a true story:
It’s a story about my roommate. He had a great ambition in high school --going to study in Peking University. However, most people around him said that was over-expected and didn’t think his dream would come true one day. Yet, he did such a bad job in the university entrance exam that he could just go to a third-rate college. Maybe he saw little light of his dream then. After 3 years he graduated and got a low-paid job in a factory.
Many people without satisfactory certificate usually spend their whole lives on the ordinary posts, whatever they like or not. However he was not reconciled to such life. He was still obsessed with his dream. So he picked up books again. In the same year he succeeded in entering GDUT for the bachelor degree study.
When he was a junior, he made up his mind to take the postgraduate school entrance exam with the aim of studying his favorite major in Zhongshan University. He said:” when I was in Maoming College, I had no chance of choosing my major; while in GDUT, I still had no chance; but now it’s up to me!" Then he took great pains to learn economics which was totally different from what he had learned before. He worked like a pious pilgrim who steps towards the holy land with no doubt. Finally, he made his dream come true.
Three years ago, he just wanted to get a job. He never had the idea of enjoying his favorite major in Zhongshan University. He felt lucky that he never gave up his dream and his courage and struggle. Now he had another great decision-he wish to get his doctor degree in Peking University in two years. I don't know whether his dream will come true one day, but what I believe is that when the dream was gradually vanishing, he was brave to grab it fast and hold it tightly. Here I pray for him.
MARTIN LUTHER KING once said:” I say to you, my friends, so even though we must face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.”
I do not realize until today that in the bottom of my heart still exists a dream, which does not come into my mind for a long time but is alive in my unconsciousness all the same. It is quite far away from me and quite difficult to reach, but from now on I’m going to strive for the dream! |
