The government of British prime minister, Tony Blair, has won an absolute majority of parliamentary seats in Britain's general election.
The result means Mr Blair has won a historic third consecutive term for his party, although the final majority is expected to be well down on that achieved in the last election in 2001.
Projections and exit polls have estimated the final majority to be around 60 to 70, against the 167 seen in 2001.
Our reporter, Kirsten Aiken, says some commentators are warning the reduced majority could prevent the government implementing its full agenda.
The leader of Australia's opposition Labor party, Kim Beazley, has congratulated Mr Blair on his election victory.
Mr Beazley says British Labour's re-election is a result of hard work and sound economic management.
He says Mr Blair will go down in history as the most successful Labour Prime Minister in British history. |
